Embedded on-site hazardous waste management for a complex defence environment

Summary

For over 15 years Pegasus has operated a dedicated, fully embedded hazardous waste service inside a major UK defence establishment, running an Environment Agency-regulated transfer station on behalf of a Tier 1 defence contractor and its wider supply chain. It is one of the clearest demonstrations of what we do: take complete ownership of a high-risk, highly regulated waste function so the client can focus on their core operations.

The challenge

A 400-acre industrial defence site generates a complex, constantly changing mix of hazardous waste streams. The client needed more than collections. They needed a partner who could run a compliant hazardous waste operation on site, every day, to agreed procedures, without adding to their own internal workload or introducing compliance risk into a security-sensitive environment.

What we do

Pegasus deploys three full-time on-site specialists, backed by additional technical and operational resource whenever it is needed. The team operates a dedicated 250-tonne hazardous waste storage and transfer facility handling annual throughputs exceeding 500 tonnes. Our people bring the specialist chemistry, hazardous waste, environmental and health and safety expertise required to run an EA-regulated transfer station safely.

Every stream is classified, pre-accepted and approved by our technical team, then collected, inspected, repacked where necessary and consolidated to maximise safety, efficiency and value, before being directed to the most appropriate treatment or disposal route. Beyond the day-to-day, we manage the whole function: packaging supply, regulatory compliance support, audit management, performance reporting and strategic waste advice. The results

Regular reporting, KPI monitoring and review meetings give the client complete visibility and assurance, while the demand on their internal resources stays low. The outcome is a safe, compliant, highly efficient operation that integrates seamlessly into wider site activities, and has done, continuously, since 2009.
